CANADIANS WEIGH IN ON THEIR FAVOURITE (AND ODD CHOICES) FOR ALL THINGS HOLIDAY ENTERTAINMENT FOR 2025

TORONTO, Dec. 15, 2025 /CNW/ - To get Canadians into the seasonal spirit, the Writers Guild of Canada surveyed 1,000 random Canadians on their favourite Canadian-written classic holiday special, best small-town setting and most beloved holiday movie premise. The results were unexpected in some cases….

Canadians weighed in on their favourite classic holiday specials. Some results were unexpected...

Please refer to this as a survey by the Writers Guild of Canada in all media coverage.

Key findings of the survey:

A. Canadians look to slasher flick for holiday comfort:

Asked what Canadian-written classic movie they will be watching over the holidays this year, Canadians made some interesting choices, including:

  1. Black Christmas
  2. Trailer Park Boys
  3. Bob and Doug Mackenzie (Strange Brew)
  4. A Heartland Christmas
  5. The Sweet Hereafter
  6. Bon Cop, Bad Cop
  7. Corner Gas
  8. Anne of Green Gables

B. Are Canadians already cancelling Tru-Katy?

Asked which premise Canadians would most like to see made into a Canadian holiday movie, Canadians would LEAST like to see Justin and Katy's love story play out on screen:

"Retired Prime Minister and single dad falls for a divorced popstar on tour. Will their romance survive the paparazzi and the holidays?" Only 16.4% of Canadians approved of this premise.

Conversely, the top three holiday movies they would LIKE to see are:

  1. The Eh! Team: An off-duty Canadian Armed Forces engineer is visiting his ex-wife in Ottawa over the holidays when terrorists suddenly take over the Parliament buildings where she works. Without access to guns, just using his ingenuity and available supplies, he must overcome the heavily armed group to save the hostages and Christmas (34.2%).

  2. (Maple) Sugar High: A Career-driven city professional is determined to marry well and only dates the richest 'catches' on a hook-up app. They meet the person of their dreams, but there's no spark. Stranded in a small town during a snowstorm, they fall in love with a humble local maple syrup harvester (who turns out to be a millionaire) (27.4%).

  3. Frozen Bases: A professional baseball player comes home for the holidays after his team narrowly loses the World Series. Broken-hearted, he meets his high school best friend, who rekindles his love for the sport and maybe more… (22.0%).

C. Schitt's and giggles:

Asked "what the greatest Christmas episode from a Canadian Show is," Canadians were quick to crown 'Schitts Creek' as number one, followed by:

2) Trailer Park Boys
3) Corner Gas
4) Letterkenny
5) The Red Green Show
6) Kim's Convenience
7) Murdoch Mysteries
8) Degrassi
9) Bob and Doug Mackenzie
10) SCTV

D. Hometown for the holidays?

Asked "What is the greatest small town for a December holiday-themed movie?" Banff, Alberta, topped the list at number 1, followed by:

2) Quebec City, QC
3) Almonte, ON
4) Niagara-on-the-Lake, ON
5) Whistler, BC
6) Elora, ON
7) Jasper, AB
8) Niagara Falls, ON
9) Toronto, ON
10) Halifax, NS

Interestingly, 5 of the 10 cities are located in Ontario.

E. Clearly Canadiana:

Asked what should be "legally required to be written into every Canadian holiday movie," Canadians were mostly nostalgic about nature, citing weather-related problems (21.4%), buying a Christmas tree (13.3%), and 'creative' use of maple syrup (11.4%) as the top three.

Canadians were also hoping to see 'a run-in at the holiday market' (11%), a snowball fight that turns 'flirty' (10.2%) and a sleigh ride in the snow (8.2%).
